Hi.  My name is Kevin Hagarty.  I am the SMILE  and First Steps teacher at West  Marion.  SMILE is a kindergarten phonics program  in which the children engage in many hands on activities within the classroom to learn letter sounds, letter names, rhyming words, vocabulary development and language development.  Small group and whole class instruction is provided.  First steps involves reading with first graders who have emerging reading skills.  These children receive 30 minutes per day of individualized instruction in the areas of sight words, phonics, fluency and comprehension.    If you have any questions about these programs you may contact me at 738-3353 or kevin.hagarty@mcdowell.k12.nc.us.
